Happy Birthday to our friend Dizzy

This week, James’s close friend and mentor Dizzy Gillespie would have been 99 years old. During his full and colourful life, Dizzy ushered in the era of BeBop in the American jazz tradition. On his death, he left a legacy of goodwill and good humor that infused jazz musicians and fans throughout the world with the genuine sense of jazz’s ability to transcend national and ethnic boundaries. For this reason, Gillespie was and is an international treasure. Dizzy called James “One of the Best” and James said this is his autobiography: “The joy and exuberance of Dizzy Gillespie was amazing to behold. He’s no longer with us but his music always will be”.
